Lolita’s Personality

It is important to establish clear boundaries to ensure that the macaw does feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that enjoy playing, interacting and climb. They should spend at least 2 to 3-hours each day in the outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, experimenting with tricks and listening to music. They love going to parks and playgrounds as well as hiking, local restaurants and bars. They are not just a great pet but also a wonderful pet for children.
Despite their adoring nature, these birds are very loud and can cause a disturbance to those who live near. They can make ear-shattering screeches and loud calls, which can be annoying to those who live in apartments or condos.
This species is also monomorphic. Males and females can be difficult to distinguish. Due to this, the only way to reliably determine sex is via DNA testing. Once sex has been determined, pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases and tricks. It is not an easy process, and it's crucial that the owner has patience and understands that this is not a task to be taken lightly. Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to cease performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita might have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to return to the sea.
The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. In addition, they keep her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.
In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, vowed to develop an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her to open water eventually. The plan would have included a facility located on the west coast of Washington in which she could reside for the rest of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the actual ocean, not a concrete tank.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Activists from across the country have called for Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. They include Ric O'Barry, who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet
As is the case with any animal species captive, a gold and blue macaw's health is contingent on a healthy diet. These beautiful birds require premium food, as well as plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. In captivity, a macaw well-fed is likely to live up to 60 years. The majestic bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.

Lolita's Health

Since her captor does not need to reveal this information, it is unclear which specific health issues the orca is suffering from. However, a database of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is often a factor in the deaths of orcas in captivity.
Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita, many people believe that she could be closer than ever before to living a wild life. The new owner of Seaquarium has stated his commitment to relocate the whale from her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.
The decision comes after years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea in which she can swim in the ocean and even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. The plans were not enough to save the whale that died on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney issue.
